Lachit Borphukan: A Brave Hero in the History of India

Lachit Borphukan was a brave warrior who fought for the freedom of his motherland. He was one of the greatest military commanders of Assam, and his contribution to Assamese society is immeasurable. Lachit Borphukan played a pivotal role in the Battle of Saraighat, which is considered one of the most significant battles in the history of India. In this article, we will take a detailed look at the life, achievements, and legacy of this great hero.

Early Life and Career of Lachit Borphukan

Lachit Borphukan was born in the year 1622 in Guwahati, Assam. His father’s name was Momai Tamuli Borbarua, he was a senior official in the Ahom kingdom. From an early age, Lachit Borphukan showed a keen interest in military tactics and warfare. He received his military training under the guidance of his father and also served as a soldier in the Ahom army.

In the year 1667, Lachit Borphukan was appointed as the Borphukan or the commander-in-chief of the Ahom army. He was entrusted with the responsibility of defending the Ahom kingdom from the Mughal invaders who were trying to expand their empire into Assam.

Battle of Saraighat

The Battle of Saraighat was fought between the Ahom army under the leadership of Lachit Borphukan and the Mughal army under the command of Ram Singh. The Mughals had a well-equipped army with superior weapons and technology. However, Lachit Borphukan used his military skills to his advantage and devised a strategy to defeat the Mughals.

Lachit Borphukan used the natural geography of the region to his advantage. He chose the Brahmaputra river as his battlefield, as it was narrow and had strong currents, making it difficult for the Mughal warships to maneuver. Lachit Borphukan’s army also had a fleet of small boats, which they used to launch surprise attacks on the Mughal warships.

The battle was fought fiercely, and the Ahom army suffered heavy casualties. However, Lachit Borphukan motivated his soldiers to fight till their last breath and not to give up their motherland to the Mughal invaders. Finally, after a fierce battle that lasted for three days, the Ahom army emerged victorious, and the Mughals were forced to retreat.

Legacy of Lachit Borphukan

Lachit Borphukan’s contribution to the Assamese society and the Indian freedom struggle is immeasurable. He is considered as one of the greatest military commanders in the history of India. The Battle of Saraighat is celebrated every year in Assam as a tribute to Lachit Borphukan and his bravery. Lachit Borphukan’s statue has been erected at various places in Assam, and he is revered as a hero by the people of Assam.
