• Female-pool ranks are more relaxed. JoSAA runs a supernumerary female-only quota to improve gender diversity, so a female candidate can often secure CSE at a CRL rank somewhat higher than the Gender-Neutral closing rank.
• Closing ranks loosen across rounds. The Round 1 closing rank is usually tighter than the final-round figure shown here, as candidates upgrade or withdraw between rounds.
• 2026 will differ slightly. Closing ranks move a little every year with the number of test-takers and seat-matrix changes, but the 415 mark is a sound planning anchor for the OPEN category.

3. How CSE cutoffs trend — and how to read them

CSE has been the single most in-demand branch at every IIT for over a decade, and IIT Kharagpur is no exception. That demand keeps the closing rank extremely tight: a CRL rank in the low hundreds is what separates a CSE seat from the next branch down.

The takeaway: Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics & Computing are the closest alternatives to CSE for a coding-focused career, and both place strongly. Many students who narrowly miss CSE happily take AI or M&C at IIT KGP over CSE at a much newer IIT — the brand, peer group and recruiter access are the same.

5. IIT Kharagpur CSE average package & placements

This is the question most aspirants and parents ask. Let us be precise and honest about what is officially confirmed versus what is a reasonable estimate.

What is officially reported: IIT Kharagpur publishes placement summaries through its Career Development Centre, and salary data is also disclosed in the NIRF rankings. Institute-wide, the average B.Tech package has been reported in the region of Rs 16-18 LPA in recent placement seasons, with several hundred companies recruiting on campus each year.

What about CSE specifically? IIT Kharagpur does not release a separate official branch-wise average for CSE. However, it is well established across IITs that CSE and allied computing branches place above the institute average. Based on widely reported recruiter patterns, a CSE graduate’s package at IIT Kharagpur typically falls in the Rs 25-35 LPA range, with strong performers and product-company roles going higher. A small number of international offers and elite quant/product roles are reported each year at packages of Rs 1 crore and above — but these are rare outliers, not the norm, and should never be treated as the “average”.

Who recruits CSE at IIT KGP? 7. Fees, scholarships & fee waivers

IIT B.Tech fees are modest relative to the return. At IIT Kharagpur, B.Tech tuition is approximately Rs 2-2.2 lakh per year, and with hostel, mess and other charges the all-in annual cost is usually under Rs 3 lakh. Over four years, a general-category student typically spends in the region of Rs 8-10 lakh.

Crucially, IITs offer generous tuition-fee remission based on family income:

Things to weigh: IIT Kharagpur’s campus is large and somewhat removed from a major metro, which some students love and others find isolating. Academic rigour is high. And while placements are excellent, the headline crore-plus packages apply to a tiny minority — plan your finances and expectations around the realistic Rs 25-35 LPA band, not the outliers.

Compared with newer IITs, IIT Kharagpur CSE wins on department depth, research opportunities and brand maturity. Compared with the very top three or four IITs, the cutoff is slightly more attainable while the outcomes remain firmly in the top tier.

• Filling the JoSAA choice list out of preference order. JoSAA always allots the highest-preference option you qualify for — never place a branch you do not want above one you do.
