| Chemistry | Moderate — Coordination Chemistry caught many off-guard | Moderate |
| Mathematics | Hard — Probability was lengthy | Hard — Calculus heavy |
Overall: 2023 was considered the toughest in the recent 5-year window by major coaching institutes. Average aggregate score was lower than 2022 and 2024.
Notable changes from previous year
- Numerical Answer Type questions had no negative marking — last year before the policy changed.
- Introduction of more match-the-list type questions in Paper 2.
- Multi-correct MCQ section retained with partial marking.
Cutoffs & Qualifying Marks (2023)

How to use this paper in your revision
- Take it timed. 3 hours, no breaks, no looking up formulas. Treat it like the real exam — same time of day if possible.
- Self-mark using the official answer key from jeeadv.ac.in. Do not refer to coaching institute solutions until you’ve attempted a question twice yourself.
- Categorise mistakes: conceptual error, calculation error, silly mistake, or genuine knowledge gap. Only the last needs a textbook revisit.
- Re-attempt wrong questions after 7 days. If you get them wrong again, that’s a chapter to redo from scratch.
Frequently Asked Questions — JEE Advanced 2023
What was the difficulty level of JEE Advanced 2023?
JEE Advanced 2023 (conducted by IIT Guwahati) was rated moderately difficult by major coaching institute analyses. Paper 1 trended slightly harder than Paper 2. The detailed subject-wise difficulty matrix is in the Difficulty Analysis section above.
How many questions are there in JEE Advanced 2023?
Each paper has approximately 48 questions split equally across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Total marks for each paper is 180, making the combined total 360 marks across both papers.
Where can I find official solutions to JEE Advanced 2023?
IIT publishes only the official answer keys, not worked solutions. Detailed solutions are published by reputed coaching institutes (Allen, Resonance, FIITJEE, Vibrant). Always cross-check coaching solutions against the official answer key on jeeadv.ac.in — coaching solutions occasionally contain errors that propagate.
What was the qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced 2023?
The aggregate qualifying mark for the Common Rank List was approximately 35% of total marks; category-wise marks are listed in the Cutoffs section above. These are the minimum to be ranked, not for IIT admission — admission cutoffs vary by branch and IIT and are 5–10x higher.
Can I use a calculator in JEE Advanced?
No. JEE Advanced does not allow calculators. A virtual calculator was not provided for 2023. Manual calculation speed is part of what the exam tests, especially on long Mechanics, Thermodynamics, and Coordinate Geometry numericals.
